Important information for end-users accessing the database using a direct click-through from a third-party site

Some users are reporting having their access to the database blocked: when they click on "Please click here to proceed" they see the usual header but underneath it is a blank page with the words "Login to the Databank".

The direct click-through route to our database relies on authenticating certain information from the user trying to gain access. The information required is nothing personal or malevolent: it is simply information to identify the site hosting the click-through link the user has clicked on to gain access (the referrer) which needs to be authenticated by our security system before access is completed. If our database cannot verify that the referral to searchthedatabase.com has come from the appropriate address for the account being accessed, it blocks access to that account, just as it would if someone was trying to access the account from a rogue address/site. Blocking of this type results in partial access - the result is the blank page as described above.

The trend seems more and more indiscriminately to block any and all information being sent from PCs back to websites that are being visited, even non-personal or internet-useful information. Unfortunately, it seems that recent updates to some internet security software (e.g. Norton, Mcafee etc.) are, by default, now blocking the sending of even basic essential information upon which our verification system depends, so some users are finding that authentication is not completing, leaving them with an almost blank page. The whole purpose of the verification process is to prevent unauthorised access which could result in abuse of both our database, and the accounts within it, so relaxation of that verification is not an option.

The solution lies within the settings on the end-user's PC, for which they must take full responsibility. If their settings/software block the referral, they will not gain access to the database. We are unable to advise on altering security settings or adjusting settings in installed software as errors, however well-intentioned, could, potentially, result in most unfortunate consequences for the user. The onus must therefore lie with the end-user to configure software that they have installed on their PC in such as way as to allow referral information to be transferred. This could mean entering www.searchthedatabase.com as an allowed/safe site but we cannot advise on how to achieve this: users should contact their internet security software providers for assistance in configuring their software.
